Chinese as is perfectly well known their mode of Government Officials is not the salary they look for alone, but the squeese or perquisites even the Mandarins Coolies make their calls this showeth that we ware not given a fair trial and that the Chinese customs were taken advantage of, and punishment mected out to us on this source. Also that I am perfectly willing to be put on a fair trial either in England or the Colonies to prove that the accusation brought against me is false.

Mr May who was my accuser and Judge in the first instance when my first petition was referred to Hong Kong, was acting Colonial Secretary and must have had undue influence with Sir F. Drake the Governor of Hong Kong on the second occasion when my petition was referred to Hong Kong Mr May was again in authority as deputy Governor during the Governors absence on leave and all I can find out is that I had admitted the charge.

What I had to admit or what might I expect only punishment which

love I should richly deserved.

This is an instance of sympathy we received from Government Officials after my diamissal I received my full pay that had been held back. In addition I applied through Mr May for passage money to England or an additional three months pay in accordance with my agreement and a good character Mr May sent for me to attend his Office and with Mr Mackie acting Chief Inspector tore up my application I was told to go, I sent a similar application stating my reasons for doing so to the Colonial Secretary of Hong Kong Mr Stewart Lockhart and in a few days three months pay was forwarded to me at my lodgings.

Mr May never once thought that we had to pay for information in connection with our detective dutied and in fact which we had been accustomed to obtain through previous Supertendats. disaffected to our duties.

The Hong Kong Police detective staff was until then without a blemish a fact with recommends from all over the East Australia and America under our previous Superintendents deputies inspectors
